Nice! The "real" bandit is not here yet, but I'll jump the gun on decoding that VIN for ya.

This here is a 1979 true Trans Am with the rare (for that year) 400 c.i.d 4-bbl engine in it. Other than that it doesn't tell me much more, except for that it was made at the Norwood GM plant. Also cool that it's a 4 speed. I don't have any exact numbers on it but I would assume that 4 speed 400 cars were extremely rare for that year. I'd say whatever you do make sure your dad doesn't let this thing go.

My god, now that's a rare 'bird. 1979 Trans Am Special Edition with the rare for 1979 Pontiac 400 (they were extra engines left over from the 1978 model year) with a 4-speed! It looks perfectly original, it even has the original spare and air canister! What I would give to just once drive this car. The vin is pretty standard for a Trans Am. http://www.transamworld.com/2genvins.php

Force the man to get it restored, the bodywork and interior look very salvageable.

Well, semi-right. In 1979 Trans Am models out numbered normal Firebirds. Out of the 117,108 Trans Ams produced in 199 there were 1,107 Special Editions with the 400 engine (the manual tranny was the only trans option for that engine). 1,107 cars is significantly fewer than the 3,050 cars that are like mine (1981 T/A SE with the 301 Turbo). The only reason his car is rare is because of the engine option. If he wanted an actually rare trans am he could buy an early Ram Air car or any of the HO models. http://www.transamworld.com/bird-prod-numb…

Dang that's rare. The engine is in nasty condition and smells like bbq for some reason. The wiring is shot (and duct taped together) , and if you try to hook up a battery it smokes. Yeah.

Oh man, yeah... the wiring in those cars suck (ask me how I know). Here's a partial wiring diagram for his car.

The engine would probably have to be totally rebuilt, the trans gone through, the wiring redone, the fuel system and rubber bits replaced, not to mention any body work that needs fixed. Yeah, it would be quite a bit of a project. I hope he knows what he will be getting into if he restores the car to the degree that it deserves
